The firm was established by Tony Ward in April 1981 in Bailey Street, Bairnsdale before moving to its current home at 10 Service Street, Bairnsdale in 1990. The firm initially operated as Semmens Hatch & Anderson but changed to Wards Barristers & Solicitors Pty Ltd from 1987.

Tony Ward was joined by Andrew Reynolds at the firm in 1997 with Andrew becoming a Partner of the firm in October 2005.
